Shipments that arrive without a valid CARM declaration or an appointed Importer of Record may be blocked at customs.
Overseas businesses now face two choices when importing into Canada:
- Appoint an Importer of Record for every single shipment, which can lead to significant additional intermediary and processing costs
- Register themselves as an importer on the CARM platform
Registering on CARM allows businesses to self-declare their shipments and pay duties and taxes directly to the CBSA in advance, minimising shipping and importing fees.
