New EU General Product Safety Regulation(GPSR)
What is the GPSR?
The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) is a new safety regulation that will replace the existing General Product Safety Directive (GPSD).
Enforcement Date: 13th December 2024
Key Changes
The key change is that from the 13th December 2024, sellers will be required to appoint an EU Responsible Person for a vast range of products – most non-food products, in fact!
- Except for 9 exempt product categories, all goods sold in the EU must:
- Have an appointed EU responsible person
- Be labelled with detailed manufacturer details
- Display clear contact information on the product itself and on product listings
Under the GPSR, these requirements now apply to both CE and non-CE marked products. (previously only CE).
Difference between GPSR vs GPSD
Key requirements under the GPSR
Product Requirements
- A Responsible Person based in the EU (EURP) for applicable products
- Product must include EURP contact details
- Manufacturer, and importer (if applicable) details on product labelling
- Type, batch, or serial number for identification, with clear visibility and legibility
Online Marketplace Requirements
- Label products with safety information and warnings, where applicable, in the language of the country where the product is being sold.
- Include the Responsible Person’s details and the manufacturer’s name and contact information for each product in online listings.
- Provide a product image and other necessary details to identify the product in online listings.
- Present warning and safety information in online listings, in the language of the country where the product is being sold.
*It’s important to remember – if your products already required safety certification to be sold in the EU, the GPSR doesn’t change this – you’ll still need to get them tested and certified!
